Overview

The Automation Engineer is responsible for maintaining and improving automated manufacturing systems to ensure optimal performance, safety, and reliability. This role focuses on diagnosing and resolving issues with PLCs, HMIs, robotics, and control systems, while also upgrading obsolete equipment and programming logic to align with current technologies.

 

Key responsibilities include:

 

  • Troubleshooting and modifying automation software and hardware.
  • Designing and implementing safety systems for automated cells.
  • Leading capital projects for automation upgrades.
  • Performing root cause analysis and recommending improvements to equipment efficiency.

 

This position requires strong technical expertise in industrial controls, robotics, and electrical systems, along with the ability to interpret technical drawings and ladder logic. Flexibility, safety compliance, and hands-on problem-solving are essential to success in this role

Responsibilities

 

  • Diagnose and resolve electrical, electronics, PLC, HMI, Robotic and computer related problems with metals processing equipment
  • Upgrade PLC and HMI programming logic and equipment to keep current with technology design or replace obsolete systems
  • Read electrical, mechanical drawings and ladder logic for troubleshooting & diagnostics
  • Modify PLC, ladder logic and computer programs to enhance equipment
  • Perform root cause analysis relating to equipment anomalies associated with automation systems and control system software
  • Design all aspects of safety systems for automation cells (guarding, safety sensors, safety PLC programming, robot safety interface, etc.)
  • Responsible for equipment reliability reviews and make recommendation for improvement in equipment efficiency
  • Lead project to investigate, analyze and prepare justifications for the purchase of automation equipment and other capital equipment purchases
  • Operational knowledge of industrial machinery which includes; hydraulics, pneumatics, motors, pumps, drives, relays, 3 phase power, communication devices, industrial/electronic controls and power transmission systems.
  • Will work flexible hours as needed to accomplish tasks required
  • Trained in Arc Flash and follows all requirements with proper PPE
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibilities and requirements of the job

Qualifications

Education, Licenses, and Certifications

 

Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field preferred or equivalent work experience required.

 

Years of Experience and Knowledge

  • 5+ years’ experience in an automation controls engineering role
  • Strong PLC, CNC, PC and Robotic trouble shooting and problem-solving ability with practical, mechanical & electrical aptitude.
  • Experience with robot programming preferred
  • Working knowledge of robotic, automation products, PLCs, etc. 

Skills and Abilities Preferred

  • Intermediate level Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint skills
  • Advanced Knowledge of Electrical, Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Blueprint reading, CNC-PLC and robotics.
  • Intermediate Knowledge of welding principles

Travel Requirements

  • 0% ~ 10% travel domestically and internationally required

Salary Range

 

$99,000 - $137,000

 

The pay range listed is for Illinois based roles.  It is not typical for a candidate to be hired at or near the top of the pay range.  Specific compensation offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including skill sets, qualifications, experience, education, certifications, training, and location.
